Radioactive Seeds for Prostate Cancer

As medical science has advanced into fields that minimize complications while treating serious problems like prostate cancer, brachytherapy (also known as seed implant) has shown dramatic improvements. The concept behind brachytherapy is to place tiny radioactive seeds, about ¼” long and the diameter of a pin, throughout the prostate in order to deliver a constant dose of radiation for several months to kill prostate cancer cells.

New improvements in this technique now allow far more precise placement of different types of radioactive seeds using high-resolution ultrasound equipment and other special imaging techniques in an operating room. New innovations include the use of “real time” treatment planning computers during the procedure to calculate the required dose of radiation more precisely. The use of ultrasound imaging during a procedure allows seed placement to be “tailored” to precisely match the size and shape of a patient’s prostate gland.

If you have been considering the different options available to treat your prostate cancer, please call South Florida Urology Center, Inc to schedule an appointment to learn more about this and other remarkable techniques.
